Downtown Vancouver's skyline is evolving, with many new construction and redevelopment projects in the works. As we begin to enter the last quarter of 2022, we wanted to spotlight a few of the exciting commercial development projects we are looking forward to seeing in the next several years.

A New Amazon Headquarters

According to Western Investor, Amazon has pre-leased all 1.1 million square feet of office space at The Post, the complex being built above the old Canada Post building on West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, which completes in the third quarter of 2022.

Located on a full city block on West Georgia Street across from the main public library, this redevelopment is being called one of the most ambitious heritage redevelopment projects in Canada’s history.

In addition to Amazon’s employees, there will be more than 185,000 square feet of retail offerings, turning this space into a bustling shopping hub in the heart of downtown Vancouver. This project by QuadReal Property Group will also feature an outdoor plaza, a bright atrium and plenty of green spaces for social gatherings.

Remco Daal, Canadian Real Estate president, says: “We are proud to work collaboratively and closely with the dedicated team at Amazon as its commitment to Vancouver and Toronto expands and as it invests today and for tomorrow in Canada.”

We can’t wait to see how this exciting new space transforms downtown Vancouver.

$2B St. Paul’s Hospital Redevelopment

Construction of the new replacement St. Paul’s Hospital in the False Creek Flats—the largest hospital development project in the history of BC—is underway. The new development is located southeast of Vancouver’s Chinatown and immediately north of Pacific Central Station and Main Street-Science World station.

While the initial projected date of opening was in 2026, that has since been pushed back to 2027. This new St. Paul’s Hospital features several new elements that aim to improve experiences and optimize wellness.

These include outdoor and rooftop gardens for rejuvenation, sacred spaces for worship, public art, single-patient rooms for family and support to stay overnight, a senior-friendly campus layout, and innovative technologies. One of these new technologies is digital way-finding to allow for easier navigation around the new campus.

The Stack

The Stack at 1133 Melville is another exciting development to watch, one that is sure to reshape downtown Vancouver. This futuristic project aims to provide the skyline of Vancouver with ‘future-forward office environments and world-class design’.

As Canada’s first commercial high-rise office tower to be awarded the CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building standards certification and LEED v4 Platinum Core & Shell title, The Stack is gearing up to be an architectural marvel, with its impressive climbing and twisting form and lush outdoor terraces.

At its full height, The Stack offers sweeping panoramic views from English Bay to the Pacific Ocean, and across the North Shore mountains to Indian Arm.

Of course, there are inviting green spaces to expect here too, including a landscape pocket park and intelligent integration with the rest of the city. Overall, this must-watch development seeks to elevate the way we view the standard office environment, featuring large, efficient floor plates, and bespoke interiors that lead to spacious outdoor decks.
